My thesis for the MACTL program involved assessing the techniques of Doug Lemov for students who were classified as Tier 2 or Tier 3 under the framework of MTSS (Multi Tiered Support Systems). All the teachers surveyed not only believed that the techniques could not work with these students, but that there were profound racial implications in the book, including the videos that accompany it.
The book not only lacks peer-reviewed research to back up the techniques, but also takes a colorblind approach. Simultaneously the first edition has a technique that some have compared to "broken windows policing."
The book is extremely controversial, including receiving strong praise. If you have experience with the book, or you are a student who attended a charter school where the techniques were used, what do you think? Share your experience below.
